The Sunrise Statue is a work sculpted in stone by Cornel Medrea (1888-1964), one of the most important Romanian sculptors of the 20th century. Author of numerous works of public forum art, made in bronze, chalk or stone, Medrea is present in the architectural landscape of Constanța and of some resorts on the seaside.
Other works of his can be found in Constanța, such as the Child with a Frog stone statue, next to the the entrance of the Art Museum of the city, or the Fishermen Statuary on the Casino Seafront. In Mamaia, other nine statues made by Medrea were placed down between 1956 and 1964, as part of a large scale program of the communist authorities for the development of the Romanian seaside.
