Statue of Mihai Eminescu
Good general condition.
- Historic monument B, code CT-III-m-B-02920;
- Located on the Casino Cliff, a 10 minute walk away from the old town of the city and 2 minutes away from the Casino.
- The bust was made by one of the most famous Romanian sculptors, Oscar Han (1891-1976).
- It was unveiled on the 15th of August 1934, with a festive atmosphere, by King Carol II.
The bust dedicated to the romantic poet Mihai Eminescu (1850-1889), considered the biggest poet of Romania, is cast in bronze and is about 1,5 meters in size. It is placed on a travertine pedestal, on which the symbolic figure of Elegy is represented, 2,1 meters tall.
The funds for the statue were obtained through a public fundraising effort which took place in the 1930’s.
The poet spent a short vacation in Constanța in 1882, staying at Hôtel d’Angleterre (demolished in 1906), on the spot where Hotel Intim is currently found.
